inside the office: morgan burke M organ Burke took a break in early February before national signing day to provide a peek into his office, nestled at the end of the northeast hall of the renovated Mackey Arena. Its the third office hes had since becoming athletic director in 1993. His first was in Mackey Arena, the desk formerly utilized by Red Mackey. Then he moved over to the Intercollegiate Athletic Facility before landing in his new digs last year. Burke picked up this memento while in London for the Olympic Games, where he followed former Purdue diver David Boudia. Boudia won gold in the 10-meter individual platform and bronze in the synchronized 10-meter with teammate Nick McCrory. This is living proof that I was a John Purdue Club member long before I was AD, he said, pointing to the bronze Boilermaker statue (on a shelf outside the main photo) that touts him as a member of Purdues booster club since 1976. I dont know why they gave that to me then or maybe they gave it to me since then. Im loyal. Stashed on a shelf out of view of the main picture, Burke has a unique piece made by Doug Lee, who was a standout basketball player for Coach Gene Keady in the mid-1980s. Lee designed a three-dimensional model while Ross-Ade Stadium was being renovated. Burke believes the gift is the only block that was made. 32 Gold & Black IllustrateD volume 23, issue 4 From Day 1, Burke has displayed the no whining button on his desk. The message is simple: When people are (complaining) and moaning, they get reminded about it. Dont whine. When I first came in, I got a button for everybody in the department. I said, Dont Whine doesnt mean you dont talk about issues. But you bring solutions that you recommend. Just dont drop it off on somebodys desk. Lets figure out how to fix it. On a far wall in the office, one lined with patterned gray wallpaper, Burke has assembled a bit of a football tribute that includes a Cradle of Quarterbacks poster signed by all but Eric Hunter. Those guys all played a key role, and I dont think you stop there. I would argue if we re-do this at some point in time, you certainly have to look at Kyle Orton up there; Curtis Painter certainly had a lot of success; and you could make an argument (Robert) Marve, given the way he finished, fits in that family. There are people in between. But to get nearly all their signatures is kind of special. GBIprint.com GoldandBlack.com
