Ill be the biggest fan of Purdue athletics, but it is not my biggest job, it is Morgans job. My biggest jobs are elsewhere. is no question that a reasonable amount of success is a big plus. Gold and Black: You have a theory about how the NCAA can get more real. Daniels: One of my crackpot theories is if Division I athletics got real and had a no hypocrisy rule, and it meant that 40 or 50 really fine players did not pretend to be college students and I wont name any schools without taking any courses, people would say it would ruin the game. I dont believe that for one minute. If those guys were all in a genuine minor league program, No. 1, I would go watch the minor league teams and you would see some darn good basketball, and, also, we fans would still pack Mackey Arena and the basketball would still be great. You couldnt tell because it would be competitive. I have never bought that the NCAA had to look the other way, at least thats how it feels. I really think if anything, it would be more exciting. And the the non-marquee sports, I like a lot of them, too, and I want to support the students who are not playing in Mackey or up here in the stadium. Gold and Black: Purdue has had much success in womens sports. What is your view on the challenges of gender equality and also the opportunity of Purdue students and student-athletes? Daniels: I love that Purdue has such a strong track record on the womens side. Ive met a lot of our women athletes already, and Ill tell you there is not one I have met Mitch Daniels, Purdues 12th President that is not a good example of a student-athlete. The men are, too, Im quality of play, if you peeled a couple of guys off the Kentucky team last year, it would still be awesome sure, but the women cannot be beat as examples athleticism by the kids who really were in class or to the rest of the 98 percent of how you can be blue chip in a sport and still every inch of Purdue committed to staying four years in college. Gold and Black: Youre a competitive guy. Is academic star. j that why youre so passionate about this? Daniels: Im trying to support student activities of all kinds, but I want to make sure to get to on the iPad Access Included for all pr subscribeint rs!
