Purdue traveled to Florida and Arizona in February, battling to an even 5-5 record to open 2013. Maher saw flashes from her team at times in different aspects of the game productive offense, solid defense and effective pitching but is still looking for the Boilers to put all three phases together. It seems each weekend we are getting better, and thats what you want to see, Maher said after the seasons first two weeks. The Boilers were tested early, battling No. 11 Louisiana State to a 1-0 loss on its home field before losing 5-4 to No. 14 Arizona in Tucson. Purdue also had No. 10 Texas A&M twice as part of the Texas A&M Invitational. Our plan is that we want to schedule tough opponents in the non-conference so that our team is ready by the time the Big Ten season starts, Maher said. Weve been right there against some good, quality teams so far and we have just fallen short. 60 Gold & Black IllustrateD volume 23, issue 4 Tom Campbell Purdues softball team, led by Ashley Courtney, Coach Kim Maher and Andie Varsho (left to right), is relying on its experience early in the season. This years team is a mix of experienced veterans and a crop of freshmen looking to make an impact in their first season. Paris Andrew and C.J. Parsons were given early opportunities in the lineup, and pitcher Lilly Fecho also logged innings early in the season. I am very pleased with this freshman class so far, Maher said. They have gotten some chances to start and get some game time. Coming in, they had the attitude that they were going to make an impact on this team. Blending with some new faces are a crop of upperclassmen looking to put their own imprint on this season, including a three-member senior class intent on making the most of its final season. We have set the bar high for this season, senior Ashley Courtney said. We want to win the Big Ten and make the NCAA tournament. As a team, we have set high expectations and there is no reason we cant accomplish those goals there is too much talent on this team for that to be the case. GBIprint.com GoldandBlack.com
