A LOOK AT THE SIGNEES Best in class: Theres no telling how things will turn out for any of these players at this point, but theres no question that the biggest get for Purdue or, rather, the biggest keep for Darrell Hazell was quarterback Danny Etling. Not only is he considered one of the better QB recruits nationally, but his name value in Indiana could give Purdue some added credibility with future in-state targets. Instant impact: Hazell doesnt know his existing personnel well enough yet to offer a guess to where his 2013 class might have the best chance to contribute right away, but numbers alone may tell the story. Purdue signed four running backs and aims to be become a more physical running team. Look for Dalyn Dawkins, Keyante Green, David Yancey and Keith Byars II to all get long looks for roles during camp. Steal: Dawkins was the last player to commit, doing so just a few days before the signing date and choosing Purdue over just Colorado State and Western Kentucky. But he was a player the Boilermakers very clearly wanted very much down the stretch and would seem to have a very distinct plan for, as Hazell has compared him to his versatile former star at Kent State, Dri Archer. The Voice-Tribune Dalyn Dawkins, a running back, has the kind of versality that Hazell likes to see. Katie GuellTerre Haute, Ind. Chemistry Katie is one of 20 members of the womens swimming and diving team to earn academic All-Big Ten honors in the Fall 2012 semester. In all, 51 Boilermaker fall 2012 athletes earned the distinction. 8 Gold & Black IllustrateD volume 23, issue 4 Plus/minus game: As is often the case when theres a coaching change, Purdue lost commitments but gained commitments from players whod previously pledged to other schools. The losses were defensive linemen Randy Gregory (Nebraska), Kyle Shortridge (Louisville) and Parker Cothren (Penn State) and offensive tackle Dwayne Johnson (Nebraska). The gains were wide receivers Dan Monteroso (Boston College) and DeAngelo Yancey (Kentucky), defensive end Evan Panfil (Illinois) and Green (UCLA). Green switched way back in the summer. Brian Neubert things we liked about this class. The other thing, if you look at the offensive side, you have running backs that can play in the slot. We have a great tight end (Matt Burke), we think, that can detach from the formation and give us some things from the outside. Its going to be an amazing class. And an important one, a tone-setter class of sorts, Purdue will hope. The signees coming hope to be part of a turnaround in West Lafayette. First off, he changed the program around at Kent State, defensive end signee Antoine Miles said. I saw that early, then I sat down and talked to him and he seemed like he was interested and he was really going to change the program around at Purdue.j GBIprint.com GoldandBlack.com
