44 / JULY.AUGUST.2019 USICERINKS.COM the discharge steam and makeup water issues that were experienced. Design work was done in the fall and winter of 2017-18 and the replacement project began in the spring of 2018. The project was phased so that one chiller was shut down, its con- denser completely replaced with the new unit put into operation before the second chiller was shut down and the process repeated. Makeup water equipment was up and running prior to the first new con- denser becoming operable. THE RESULT The new units were placed on elevated platforms to get the discharge steam to leave the units above the adjacent roofline so it wouldn't be affected by wind and also to allow for gravity drain of makeup water back to a remote sump tank inside the refrigeration room. New water treatment equipment was incorporated into the design of the project to include passivation of the new condensers. The end result is a properly operating condensing system which has eliminated all of the freezing issues previously expe- rienced and significantly reduced energy consumption by the compressors since , The new condensing system has eliminated freezing issues and also significantly reduced energy consumption. In the future, these condensers will be moved to the roof of a planned addition in this same area. , Makeup water equipment was up and running prior to the first new condenser's installation. The project was phased so that each condenser could be replaced one at a time. Further, the makeup water stayed out- side in each unit year round, even in the extreme Wisconsin weather conditions. Significant freezing issues occurred regu- larly whenever the ambient temperature reached 0 degrees F, which happens regu- larly each winter in Wisconsin. Lastly, they were undersized to begin with. Put it all together and it led to lots of issues frequently in the winter months, obviously the busiest time of the year in an ice rink. THE JOB New units were needed to prevent failure of the equipment and to eliminate the issues due to the lack of capacity and also 5 6 CONDENSER CHAOS
