S e c t i o n | GREAT LAKES BOATING 55 Rochester, New York BRADDOCK POINT LIGHTHOUSE I f you traveled back in time to 1897 and ask captains navigat- ing the waters of Lake On- tario which lighthouse shines brightest, their answer would be the Braddock Point Lighthouse. If you were to travel to the lighthouse today, you would find someone at the door telling you if they had any rooms available for you to stay. That's right, Braddock Point Lighthouse, located about 20 miles northwest of the heart of Rochester, N.Y., not only serves as one of the few remaining functioning lighthouses in the United States, also operates as an active bed and breakfast for anyone. Shut down in the 1950s, the light- house existed only for children in the area to exchange haunted stories about the abandoned building. It was bought out by a private family and relit in 1999. From 1999-2009, the lighthouse lit the surrounding area as it had a cen- tury previous, but the public was not allowed in the lighthouse. In 2009, the lighthouse became a seasonal bed and breakfast and in 2018 it turned into a year-around bed and breakfast all while still running as a functional lighthouse. Featured as a grand prize in The Price is Right, this bed and breakfast features rooms consisting of Victorian antiques and designs that, according to their website, will make those staying feel right at home. In addition to the classic Victorian feel, each room fea- tures Wi-Fi and private baths to com- bine classic and modern atmospheres into one. "We've had people come from around the world," said Donald Town, current owner of the lighthouse, "it's a real treasure."
