IDAHOFALLSMAGAZINE.COM 39 "We had no issues, no one was arguing with each other," Borek said. "Everyone was helping each other. That's pretty neat to see for this day and this age of kids. It was so much fun." She said the poor weather also inadvertently gave the recruits real-world experience on the different types of environment and working conditions they will face. "When you work construction you work outside, so you need to know what the environment is like before you work construction," Borek said. Russ Jensen, President of Eastern Idaho Home Builders Association, noted in April that the construction industry, in gen- eral, has seen "a shortage of skilled tradesmen." "The Construction Combine provides an opportunity to train/ educate new young blood we hope will have a desire to con- tinue in the construction careers and help us fill a great need," Jensen added. Nadene Michaelson, Executive Director of EIHBA, also pointed out that there are rewarding careers with healthy incomes in the home building industry. "The Eastern Idaho Home Builders Association wants students to understand they have a choice," Michaelson stated. "They can choose to go to college, but there is another option. They can choose to go into the trades. The home building industry needs individuals to join the workforce. There is a great deal of satisfac- tion in seeing a home that is finished and knowing your hands helped to build it." Other sponsors included REDI, Westmark Credit Union, Construction Solutions, Intermountain Gas Company and INL to name a few. The first Construction Combine was hosted in 2018 by Idaho State University and Home Depot in Pocatello. Since then, local businesses have sponsored the event in Twin Falls, Nampa, Coeur D'Alene and Ontario, Oregon. Most of these two-day events were also held at the nearest Home Depot. CEI will have a second "draft" in 2020, though the date is still undetermined. Go to constructioncombine.org for more informa- tion on upcoming Construction Combine events in Idaho.
