Sales were up 4.4 percent year over year. • Industrial production dipped 0.1 percent in January from December. Manufacturing output decreased 0.4 percent in January following upwardly revised gains of 1.1 percent in December and 1.7 percent in November. • Spending on construction in December was 0.9 percent higher than November and 7.8 percent higher than December 2011. The index assesses the month on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the carrier's worst month and 10 being the best. The index level for carriers with more than 100 power units was 5.76 (up from 5.73 in December), while the level for those with 10 to 100 power units was 5.76 (down from 5.81 in December). BLS also revised its data from recent years, showing that hiring over the past year was stronger than originally thought. Payroll employment in trucking in January totaled 1.375 million jobs — up 0.36% from December and 3.6% from January 2012.
