Raimondo, Navigant congratulate students in financial literacy class SMITHFIELD – State General Treasurer Gina Raimondo greeted students at the Old County Road Elementary School Wednesday morning where she extended congratulations and certificates to the state's first elementary school students to complete a pilot program designed to teach financial literacy to youngsters. The Vault program, piloted for Rhode Island in Smithfield, is an expansion of the EverFi classes offered to 12 Rhode Island high schools. Vault is designed for the younger students to start them off with a foundation for learning future financial habits. Raimondo was startled when she asked the 5th-graders how many had phones, and most of the students' hands went up. She cautioned them that, with smart phones and other tools, there will be more opportunities to spend money easily, and they need to be careful using the technology. The program was sponsored by Navigant Credit Union, which has its headquarters in Smithfield, and administered by students of Bryant University, who are part of the Bryant Enactus team. Also on hand Wednesday was Navigant Credit Union Chief Executive Officer Gary Furtado, Navigant Vice President of Business Development Randall Sacilotto, and Bryant's Enactus project leader Fatma Rizvan. Town officials on hand included Town Manager Dennis Finlay, School Superintendent Robert O'Brien, School Committee member Virginia Harnois, and Town Councilor Suzanna Alba, among others. Sacilotto told The Breeze the program engaged 5th-graders with lessons that were part of Vault's interactive media program designed to cultivate good financial sense that will stay with them a lifetime. Lessons cover such topics as identifying ways to make money now and in the future, career possibilities, responsible saving and spending, budgets, the difference between cash and credit, and value of giving to charity.
