N EXT TO THE REFRIGERATION SYSTEM, an ice resurfacer (IR) is the single most important piece of equipment in an ice rink. Your rink is in the business of selling ice, and without an ice resurfacer, you simply wouldn't be able to provide customers with the highest quality product possible. Because of this, it is imperative that a strategy is in place for maintaining this vital piece of equipment so that it operates effectively and for a long period of time. There are two types of equipment mainte- nance strategies: reactive and proactive. , Reactive maintenance, often referred to as breakdown or corrective maintenance, is when a piece of equipment is in use until it fails, then repairs are made in order to restore the equipment to its normal operating condition. On the surface, this strategy might seem to be cost effective, because spending time or money on main- tenance between repairs does not occur.
