NORTHSHOREMAG.COM 6 OCTOBER 2019 PHOTOGRAPHS, TOP TO BOTTOM BY TONY SCARPETTA, BY PATRICK SPORLEDER, BY ROGER DAVIES, AND BY SCOTT GOODWIN October is not the time of year when you might talk about new beginnings. at is usually reserved for January. But I thought the issue topic lends itself nicely to highlighting some of the changes happening around the North Shore. For instance, not only is the Peabody Essex Museum presenting its new, state-of-the-art 40,000-square-foot-wing, but it is also getting a new director. Brian Kennedy is the new Rose-Marie and Eijk van Otterloo director and CEO of the museum. This all comes to fruition during the reinstallation of PEM's galleries as part of the museum's landmark $650 million Connect Campaign. With clear goals, a creative spirit, and an Irish warmth, Kennedy shares his plans to continue to create experiences that transform people's lives through interactive and thought- provoking exhibits. He comes to Salem with a long history in the art realm, having held leadership positions in art museums around the world, including Ireland, Australia, and the United States—most recently at the Toledo Museum of Art in Ohio. We wish him great success in his new endeavor and welcome him to the community. He also graces our cover this issue. This year also ushered in a new president of Montserrat College of Art in Beverly. Kurt T. Steinberg has taken over the helm from Stephen D. Immerman, just as the college is on the verge of turning 50 in 2020. As the eighth president of the college, Steinberg is excited to be a part of the school's continued success and to bring a fresh perspective to teaching art and design—citing greatness as the college's aspiration. He came to Montserrat after 12 years at Massachusetts College of Art and Design, always pushing for the success of the students, be it through curriculum, increased financial aid, or corporate partnerships that reduced costs and expanded student services. He is excited to carry on his work by inspiring and supporting the students of Montserrat in their accomplishments. We welcome him and wish him every success in this vital role that helps form students' lives on the North Shore. Drop us a note and let us know which leaders you admire in our community.
