4 THE WOLVERINE DECEMBER 2019 WAS ABC WRONG? Dear The Wolverine, During the broadcast of the U-M vs. Maryland game on ABC, announc- ers Steve Levy and Brian Griese mentioned more than once that Zach Charbonnet had broken the all-time Michigan record for TDs by a fresh- man with 11. This didn't sound right to me, so I looked it up and the record holder is none other than Willie Heston, our highest scorer from Yost's "Point A Minute" teams. In his freshman year of 1901, he scored 20 TDs. Jim Olinski Palatine, Ill. Mr. Olinski, We looked into it, but times were a bit different when Heston played in 1901. He had actually played three seasons (1898-1900) at San Jose Normal (now San Jose State) before coming to Ann Arbor. Although he was allowed to par- ticipate in four years worth of action at U-M, he wasn't really considered a genu- ine freshman in 1901, hence the lack of a Heston mention for that category. A HYPOTHETICAL QUESTION Dear The Wolverine, With the Minnesota Golden Go- phers football team being undefeated thus far this season it brings to light a question: If Michigan and Minnesota were to play in the Big Ten Football Championship game some season, would the Brown Jug trophy in ad- dition to the Big Ten Championship trophy be awarded to the winner? What if it was the second time the two teams played that season? John O. Jacksonville, Fla. John, Here's the best explanation we have been able to track down, courtesy of Michigan: the regular-season meeting would be the only one to count for the trophy because it would be the only game "guaranteed" that season. If they only met in the title game, it would be doubtful the Brown Jug would be on the line, because the championship game is already a "trophy" game. Hope this helps, and here's to hoping we see this come to fruition so that we can see the official answer (though we'd settle for Michigan versus anybody in the Big Ten title game, at this point). IF ANYBODY DESERVES A STATUE … Dear The Wolverine, Why is it the athletic department has no Tom Harmon statue or anything to honor our first Heisman winner? James R. Stout Sr. Chicago Mr. Stout, When we asked our esteemed staff members this question, the first response we got back was: "fair question." That said, another staffer pointed out that there are no statues on campus that honor any players. To our collective knowledge, Bo Schembechler is the only person with ties to the football program immortalized on campus with a statue. There are certainly bits of memora- bilia and things of that nature around to honor Harmon, but no statue.
