otato growers and industry leaders from
across the country will descend upon the
nation's capital next month as part of the
National Potato Council's Potato D.C. Fly-In. New
and returning attendees will have a chance to better
understand and advocate for the industry's most
pressing policy priorities. Details of the Feb. 24-27
event are being finalized, but NPC Chief Executive
Officer Kam Quarles gave Spudman a preview of
what's to come and benefits of participating.
Looking ahead to D.C. Fly-In, what are you targeting as
areas of focus?
1. Trade. I think trade is still going to be front
and center as we get into the new year. We've got
to figure out how the House will move forward
with ratifying the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement
(USMCA). Also, is there going to be a second bigger
Japan trade agreement now that the original FTA
has been completed? Where does China end up?
2. Labor. Also, the ag labor bill (Farm Workforce
Modernization Act) has been introduced in the
House. The Senate will be right at the time of Fly-In.
