An accent wall painted in Sherwin-Williams' "Chaise Mauve" helps anchor the space as well; it also draws the eye to the window. Practical upholstery choic- es include a slate cotton twill on the Bantam Collection sofa from Design Within Reach and a durable rose-col- ored faux suede by ROMO on the Robert Allen custom ottomans, which provide extra seating in a pinch. While Hirsch helped the owners repurpose some existing pieces—the coffee table and media center—she used stylish accessories to polish off the media area. The sofa's accent pillows, a mix of ready-made and custom, showcase designer patterns by both John Robshaw and Mally Skok. Crate and Barrel's Jackson floor lamp casts light for reading, while the art, curated by Hirsch and purchased from Minted, pops with visual interest. Even the lighting received a great deal of thought. "The semi-flush-mount light in the media area gives lighting overhead with a soft silhouette," says Hirsch. "For the kitchen and play area, the couple chose custom industrial-style stem pendants. Made by Barn Light Electric, they feature curvy half-dome shades and clear glass jelly jar bulbs." Their galvanized aluminum bulb guards protect against stray ping-pong balls. "The goal of the project was to create something functional and whimsical, to make a bland basement warm and inviting," says Hirsch of her efforts. Even the homeowners were surprised at the design heights their unfinished lower level could achieve. "No one can believe it's a basement," says the wife. Perhaps the best part is its resulting functionality. "It's nice to have a separate spot for entertaining. Plus, in the summertime, people can walk right out to the backyard," says the owner. "It looks beautiful yet feels informal, so people can actually relax when they visit," she continues.
