54 Bruce Eaton and Terri Teleen are among the growing number of people interested in minimizing their carbon footprint. In fact, that was the guiding principle that drove the design of their 1,500-square-foot, near-net-zero Boxford home. Steeped in green building science, the modern New England farmhouse is a study in efficiency. From the tight envelope to the economy of space to the sparse furnishings, the house exemplifies smart design in a small footprint. The couple purchased the property—situated on a five-acre parcel—in 2014. Originally a summer house, the existing structure was woefully far from the high- performance mark they were targeting. Among builder Steve Howell's—of Howell Custom Building Group—first moves was to save and shore up a portion of the house to serve as a woodworking shop. Beyond that, it was a new build. Working with architects from GO Logic, Howell customized the Maine-based firm's "GO Home," a high- performance prefab structure designed to be replicated.
