BY ANDREW CRUMP BREW ROOTS E AT + D R I N K "The North Shore is defined by a few key details: Salem and its witch trial tourism, super old houses, too-narrow roads, ice-coated hills in winter, and people who drive like maniacs," says Marblehead native Jeff Marquis, co-owner and head brewer of Peabody's Granite Coast Brewing. His partner in beer and forever best friend, Rob Dunn, makes no argument. Thankfully, another key feature of the North Shore is its identity as a brewing hub, and Granite Coast Brewing fits right in. With a mix of shipbuilders, leatherworks, fishermen, and lobstermen on the North Shore, adding beer to its economy makes sense. Marquis and Dunn got their start making small batches of beer—a copycat recipe of Dog fish Head's 90 Minute IPA— in Dunn's kitchen seven years ago. This experiment led them from Dunn's house to his garage, where they had no running water and they were lucky if they had electricity. Those inconveniences made brewing a real challenge, but the friends knew they wanted to open up a business at that point. So they began researching and developing their own brand. They wanted Granite Coast to be its own thing—a concept that speaks to who they are both as brewers and as natives of the North Shore. Although they felt the market was pretty well saturated with breweries, Marquis equates opening another brewhouse to another extension of the ripple effect. "When you throw a stone in the water," he says, "you get a ripple that keeps going. When another brewery opens and they're trying to do the next big thing, they throw another stone. Essentially, we've cascaded into the multiple ripple effect, where people are doing crazy stuff because they're looking for social media fodder." It's a race to see who triumphs in the war of wacky beers—each brewery jamming newer, wilder ingredients (think whole apple A flight of beer at Granite Coast.
