The $207 million Salem expansion does just that with a separate new wing, a state- of-the-art Emergency Department, a 24-bed medical-surgical Pingree Floor unit, and the 120-bed Epstein Center for Behavioral Health. The redesign includes 118,000 square feet of new space for the new Emergency Room and the Pingree Floor, and 137,000 square feet of renovated space for the Epstein Center, formerly Spaulding North Shore. The entrance to the Emergency Department is now around the back of the Highland Avenue campus, and is accessible from Jefferson Avenue, which necessitated building a different access drive to enhance circulation through the hospital campus as well as the surrounding neighborhood. Prominent signage makes the new emergency department easier to find. The Emergency Department features dedicated areas for treating adult, pediatric, and behavioral health patients. Chair of Emergency Medicine Phillip Rice, Jr., M.D., has said, " You're not going to get better care anywhere else." The unit is composed of three state-of- the-art trauma rooms directly adjacent to the ambulance bay, providing acutely ill patients with access to immediate, high- level care. Sixty-five spacious patient bays are glass-enclosed rooms that allow privacy for patient-caregiver conversations as well as discretion for their families. On-site imaging technology, including CT scanning, 92 ultrasound, and X-ray, allow for quick and seamless diagnosis within the setting. The result: less wait time and enhanced intervention for emergency care. NSMC used innovative models in designing and implementing mental health care. The Epstein Center for Behavioral Health with 120 beds—60 adult, 30 pediatric, and 30 geriatric—is the largest inpatient mental health service embedded in an acute care hospital in Massachusetts. It allows for a more holistic approach for treating patients who have both medical and psychiatric conditions and provides access to a full range of care with nonpsychiatry specialists under one roof. Chair of psychiatry Mark Schechter, M. D., has said that "these services under one roof offer better care to our patients and will also help break down the stigma associated with psychiatric conditions." "Our ability to address patients' medical problems at the same time we treat their mental health concerns in the best The new Epstein Center and gardens.
