He took over a Purdue program coming off back-to-back bowl appearances — but those bids were earned by reaching only .500 in the regular season. Hazell knew changing the culture would be high on his list of challenges in his first Big Ten coaching job. After four weeks of spring practices, capped by Saturday's spring game, Hazell thinks the groundwork has been laid. "I think the biggest thing is to grow together as a team. If you can do that, then you've got a chance to be pretty successful," Hazell said. "I think our guys are really starting to understand what we're demanding of them and responding extremely well."
