Opening ADDRESS Welcome from Jeff Theiler 12 / MARCH.APRIL.2020 USICERINKS.COM Staying Focused Ice rinks have been in the news a lot the past few weeks. In fact, sports in general have been a huge topic of conversation as we've seen the NHL, the NBA, and MLB all postpone/pause/suspend and cancel their seasons. Plus there's the cancellation of IIHF and ISU world championships all due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Making the best of a bad situation isn't always easy. The impact we've all felt as hockey tournaments and figure skating competitions were canceled, skating lessons and hockey leagues postponed, affected our bottom line and, more importantly, disrupted the lives of our customers and staff on an unprecedented level. We've seen some of our members share the things they are doing around their facilities; projects large and small that would have been tough to start, let alone complete during a normal week. Kudos to you for making the most of a difficult situation. But still, we at U.S. Ice Rinks remain focused on helping to educate and inform. This issue of RINK focuses on a variety of topics; some we haven't taken on before, while others are old hat. Check out the article on music licensing on page 46. It's everything you need to know about performance rights organizations and why you actually do have to pay their fees. On page 52 we have an article that outlines an exciting new program from U.S. Figure Skating that will help rinks make the connection between group lessons and U.S. Figure Skating club structure. Our next issue comes out just in time for NARCE and will be a collaboration and celebration of our past 20 years as the premier membership organization dedicated to the success of the ice rink industry! I hope you enjoy this issue of RINK, and that by the time you're reading this our country has settled down, our children are back in school, our sport seasons have picked up where they left off, and the economy is back on track. Wishing you and yours a safe and healthy spring. — Jeff Theiler, Chief Operating Officer, United States Ice Rink Association THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE UNITED STATES ICE RINK ASSOCIATION MARCH/APRIL 2020 // VOL. 23, NO. 2 USICERINKS.COM // INFO@USICERINKS.COM C E O Steve Farbman P R E S I D E N T James McEwen S E N I O R V I C E P R E S I D E N T David Jensen C O N T R O L L E R Mike Schwarz C R E AT I V E D I R E C T O R Rob Johnson A RT D I R E C T O R Mike DeArmond S E N I O R D E S I G N E R Brandon Favre D E S I G N E R S Kelsey Cherwinka, Melanie Schumacher A D S A L E S Bryan Nelson M A R K E T I N G & AC C O U N T M A NAG E R Jessica Disch E D I T O R S : Aaron Paitich, Jessi Pierce M A R K E T I N G C O O R D I NAT O R Elizabeth Boger RINK Magazine is the definitive business publication for professionals in the ice rink industry and is the leading source for information on facility management, operations and programming.
