WWW.POTATOGROWER.COM 13 American Farmland Trust Announces New Regional Director American Farmland Trust (AFT has hired Addie Candib as its Pacific Northwest regional director. Candib will provide strategic leadership for AFT's programs in the Pacific Northwest, with an emphasis on Washington, Oregon and Idaho, to advance AFT's mission to save the land that sustains us by protecting farmland, helping farmers implement environmentally sound farming practices, and keeping farmers on the land. Candib will be based out of AFT's Pacific Northwest Office in Seattle. AFT has worked with farmers, land trusts, public leaders and others to promote the protection of farmland from real estate development and opportunities for farmers to be good stewards of the land. AFT has also worked with partners to elevate the role of farms and ranches in combating climate change and to build the capacity of land trusts, farm groups, Extension staff and other partners to bring a new generation of farmers onto the land. U.S. Chipping Potatoes Given Year-Round Access to Japan Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry recently informed the USDA that U.S. chipping potatoes will be allowed to enter year-round, starting Feb. 14, 2020. Previously, the import protocol for U.S. chipping potatoes was from Feb. 1 to July 30 each year. The new language states that U.S. chipping potatoes can enter all year. Japan is the U.S. potato industry's largest export market, with exports totaling over $350 million in the past year. In 2019, the U.S. exported 32,240 metric tons of fresh chipping potatoes, valued at more than $15 million, to Japan.
