"In medical school, I developed sarcoidosis, an autoimmune disease which causes your immune system to attack itself. I prayed for God to heal me, and He said, You need to get stress and pressure under control. He instructed me to spend more time in the Word, more time with my family, and to exercise. I did that and was healed. Now, after being contaminated with HIV, I prayed—and was healed." The Next Step Getting accepted into a neurosurgical residency was no easy task. Four hundred people vied for fewer than 100 positions. But once again God favored Jackson, and he was accepted into a six-year neurosurgical residency program at Penn State. Part of the certification required participants spend their fourth year doing research. Jackson chose to conduct research on head injuries in children. His research was almost halted when Jackson was asked to fill a vacancy created when a resident left abruptly. "We know that this is your research year, but we need you to help take care of patients," officials told Jackson. Jackson went back to taking care of patients, certain he would be allowed to make up the lost time on his research. But God had a different plan. Continue your research at night. Don't stop! Jackson heard the Lord say. "I was pretty tired," Jackson recalls. "We started seeing patients between 5 and 6 each morning. en we operated all day. Afterward, we took care of patients until around 10 p.m. at's when I started my research for two to four hours each night. "I worked with one of my mentors, and we were able to get a peer review grant approved. at proved we were very active in the research. I didn't know at the time how important that would be." As he neared the end of his neurosurgical residency, an opportunity opened for Jackson to attend a complex spine fellowship, where he would learn the intricacies of spine pathology and how to operate on the spine. "You can't go," a director told him. "For you to meet the criteria, you'd have to graduate a year early, which has never been done before. Besides, you still have to do your research." Because of his obedience to the Lord's prompting to continue his research each night, Jackson met all the criteria and did what no one else had done. He graduated a year early. Moving to Chicago, Jackson then completed a complex spine fellowship. Following the fellowship, he worked for a year in Winchester, Va. In 2002, he accepted a job in a practice at Genesys Regional Medical Center in Grand Blanc, Mich. Two years later, in 2004, Jackson bought the practice. Honor Me Before Men After moving back to Michigan, Jackson's family introduced him to a woman named Andrea, a minister on the staff at their church, Word of Faith International Christian Center. Two years later, Jackson and Andrea married. Four years into his new practice, Jackson heard the Lord tell him to start praying for his patients. "Lord, You know that Andrea and I pray for my patients each morning before I leave home," Jackson responded. DEPRESSION AFFECTS THE STEM CELLS. IT MAKES THE IMMUNE SYSTEM WEAK, DRYING UP THE BONE MARROW, WHICH ABOUNDS WITH STEM CELLS."
