56 SPRING 2020 S OMEWHERE IN THE HINTERLANDS OF MANCHESTER- By-the-Sea is a shingled barn-like home that rises out of some glaciated rugged uplands dominated by lacy hemlocks, familiar Cape Ann granite, and swathes of ferns. The land, having been in the same family since the 1940s, has been sparingly developed—most recently, in 2008 by an appreciative son, his wife, and their children. After living in Manhattan for many years the creative couple had decided to decamp to the North Shore and live in harmony with its inland beauty. When thinking about how to landscape the 1.5 acre property, the homeowners were inspired by family gardens nearby. They wanted to keep it as native as possible with no distinct borders. Accordingly, "the line between the woods and the property is very blurry." In addition, they have diligently worked to compliment the lush natural setting and not try to "improve it" with non-native plants that would look better in town. In other words, you are not going to find a hydrangea here. The backdrop around the house is decidedly green with spurts of seasonal colors. In the early spring, daffodils push up in clumps and look great amongst the emerging varieties of fiddlehead ferns and Lenten roses. As spring gains steam, a sharp eye will lead to cultivate Black-eyed Susan's abound the summer garden. The plantings offer a rich color palette.
