SPRING 2020 57 nshoremag.com/nshorehome/ Daylilies offer a burst of peach along the walkways. a strawberry patch, a carpet of fragrant lily of the valleys, or a precious stand of pink lady's slipper orchids that seek the dappled light of the mixed forest. By summer, a warm color palette takes over. Woodland- loving plants such as black-eyed Susan's, daylilies, and bee-balm thrive on a sloping front field. Self-sowing French marigolds also work well here. Perky orange nasturtiums, inspired by the Isabella Stewart Gardiner museum's courtyard display, tumble over the granite retaining wall at the bottom. The depth and textures are marvelous. A generous amount of afternoon light allows these sun-loving plants to flourish. There is so much going on in this Manchester setting. The most recent addition was a vegetable garden cleverly planted on top of their modern flat garage. The first step was to build an outdoor side staircase to access it. Deep raised beds were then assembled and have plenty of good soil to handle the heat—that was a must. Tomato plants, cucumbers, beans, and peas have all succeeded and add to a modest crop this diverse landscape provides each summer. In addition, a Niagara white grape vine thrives on an arbor that covers the front patio area. Not only does it produce fruit but it protects the house from the summer sun. In the winter, after it is cut back, sunlight is welcome. After the September harvest, the family makes batches of tasty vinegar every year. They press the grapes, bottle the juice, and let it ferment in the basement for six months until it is ready. Voila!
