8 SPRING 2020 Nancy E. Berry, Editor P.S. If you have a home design or landscape project that you would like to share, send me an email at nberry@nshoremag.com. T HIS IS A TERM THAT I HAD NEVER HEARD OF BEFORE this March, when the world was asked to stay home during the COVID-19 health crisis. My thoughts and prayers are with the families who have been struck by this insidious virus. And I hope we are all staying home as much as possible to "flatten the curve." Like many of you, I have been working from home and have had time to assess things around my house that need some TLC—the kitchen needs painting, the back bedroom needs plaster repair, the pantry needs to be reor- ganized, and my old floors could use a good refinishing. This time-out also gives us the chance to reassess how our homes function for our families. Is there quiet office space away from aging parents who have the sound on the TV turned up? Is there a space for the kids to do crafts without staining the oriental rugs and hardwood floors? Do you have enough pantry space to stock up on necessities? Is there an extra bedroom to host a grandparent if they can't stay on their own? What about outdoor spaces? Do you have an outdoor living area to have a meal out in the fresh air? Is there a play area for your little ones? In this issue, we highlight several renovation projects in older homes that create updated, customized living spaces—both inside and outside—that function well for each individual family. Architect Kyle Sheffield, principal at LDa Architecture & Interiors, renovates a Shingle-style house that had fallen into disrepair, which was originally designed by Boston architect Samuel Dudley Kelley in 1893. Sheffield modernizes the space with better light and flow. Meanwhile, landscape designer Hilarie Holdsworth revives the grounds with strategic hardscaping and plantings and creates outdoor living spaces for the family to enjoy. Architect Mat Cummings embarks on a property- wide overhaul on a 50-year-old home in Middleton. The interiors are reimagined into modern open spaces that still manage to honor the original traditional design. A wall of windows provides continuity from the interior to the outdoor living spaces, which include a pool and cabana. And Robert S. MacNeille, principal of Carpenter & MacNeille Architects and Builders in Essex, renovates an 1880s house and transforms it into a home that is calm, ordered, and serene.
