From the Editor contributors Hidden Treasures when you live in a neighborhood that's got plenty of great things to see and do, it's easy to patronize the same restaurants, shops, fitness facilities, natural attractions, and service providers each time a need arises. Unless it's to visit a buzzedabout new spot or a well-known one that you haven't tried, chances are you don't often cross borders into other towns to discover what else is out there. It's not uncommon here at our offices to hear conversations that revolve around who did what in their respective towns over the weekend, and it's more common still to hear a reaction somewhere along the lines of, "I've never been there," or "I've never heard of it." As the saying goes (sort of), one man's regular haunt is another man's hidden gem, and our own staff is proof of that. So, in this issue we share some of our 10 nshoremag.com May/June 2013 REV_NSMayJune13_Contributors.indd 10 own favorite hidden gems on the North Shore, from jewelry stores to clothing boutiques to bakeries, and a few outdoorsy items. Our capstone hidden gems feature starts on page 128, and it's filled with tidbits that'll help you shake up that routine. We filled the rest of this issue's pages with stories about businesses, trailblazers, organizations, and other entities with which you might not previously have been familiar. Salem is one of the North Shore's most well-known towns, so writer Debbie Strong set out to discover some of its more under-the-radar spots, which you'll find starting on page 52. (Of course, some of the more popular spots that are just too good not to mention made the cut as well.) In January, I was introduced to the Northeast Massachusetts Youth Orchestra (NMYO) upon attending a concert at the Shalin Liu Performance Center in Rockport to benefit the program. Prior to receiving that invitation, I hadn't heard of NMYO. Impressed by what I'd seen and compelled to know more, I commissioned writer Megan Johnson to go behind the scenes of the NMYO. Read more about it and its bright young musicians on page 70. Another hidden gem that speaks loudly to many people in our region is Kitchen Local ("Kitchen Collaborative," page 88). The North Shore is rife with small businesses helmed by savvy and ultra-skilled individuals whose pockets aren't exactly bottomless, and Kitchen Local's is a story I hope those folks will read with pointed interest. Enjoy discovering a new side to the North Shore with this issue, and tell us what some of your own favorite hidden gems are. Lindsay Lambert, editor lindsay@rmsmg.com Shannon Yates A portrait, food, and travel photographer based on the North Shore, Yates ("Kitchen Collaborative," page 88) has been making pictures for 30plus years. Having grown up in this area, she has a unique perspective on all the North Shore has to offer. Yates, of No. 8 Photography, shoots for private, commercial, and editorial clients for. She lives in Marblehead with her husband and three children. See her work at www.no8photography.com. Debbie Strong For this issue, Strong rediscovered Salem, one of her favorite North Shore cities ("Pride in Past and Present," page 52). "Every person I spoke to...really wanted to help spread the word about their beloved city, and each had a mile-long list of favorite places to share," she says. An editor at Everyday Health whose work has appeared in Shape, Dance Teacher, iVillage.com, and AOL. com, Strong lives on the North Shore with her husband and is expecting a baby this summer. April Lyn Graffeo Graffeo, who groomed our model for "Blazer Sharp" on page 34, is the owner of Indra Salon & City Spa in Andover. Graffeo trained at the Aveda Business College and has appeared in industry publications; her work can be found in the pages of Boston, Northshore, New England Bride, Fashion Boston, Mirror, and more. Her celebrity clients include Magic 106.7's Candy O'Terry, "TV Diner" host Jennie Johnson, and Doug Flutie. Aricia Symes-Elmer After working in the fashion industry in Europe and Asia, Symes-Elmer, founder and head wardrobe stylist at Shift Your Style, refined her personal styling skills and began sharing her talents and expertise on an individual basis. She has been featured on WBZ-TV, serves as the exclusive stylist of Northshore Mall, and is the in-house stylist for Indra Salon.
