Correspondence ne Home Rug Life Prints Charming Landry & Arcari rugs. When it comes to family and community, Landry & Arcari embraces its relationships with the strength of a well-tied knot. By Kiley Jacques I t all began with Jerry Arcari's after-school job in a Lawrence rug shop. His effort to earn a little pocket money quickly turned into a lifelong passion for the industry. Young Arcari was fascinated by the stories the rugs told of people and faraway places. The rugs he washed became a symbol of travel and commerce. It was this idea that has the North Andover native now saying, "Landry & Arcari: We bring the world to your feet." Following the flame ignited by his early job, Arcari pursued an apprenticeship with an Oriental rug expert from Beirut and spent 12 years working as a buyer for Jordan Marsh in Peabody. Then, in 1981, equipped with an impressive level of expertise, he and his wife, Connie, purchased Salem-based Landry Brothers Upholstery Furniture, whereupon the family-owned and -operated Landry & Arcari Oriental Rugs and Carpeting was born. In time, the Arcari children—Jay, Julie, and Jeffrey—entered the business and now share ownership. Though establishing themselves in their current roles 15 to 20 years ago, all were required to work in the store as adolescents. On weekends, says the senior Arcari, "they were sweeping, flipping rugs, or doing whatever was necessary to make the business run properly." Today, with a business management degree from Northeastern University, Julie Arcari, CEO, controls the finances; Jay, as operations manager, runs the Salem store and supervises rug installations; Jeffrey is 146 nshoremag.com March/April 2013 On behalf of the city and businesses of Amesbury we would like to wholeheartedly thank you for highlighting Amesbury in your January/February 2013 issue ("Pleasant Surprises," page 49). Melissa Lachance, executive director, via email With Thanks [We just saw] copies of the March/April issue of Northshore with the fabulous article about Landry & Arcari ("Rug Life," page 146). Thank you! It was so well written and really captured our business and family. I was actually a little teary eyed as I read it. We all work hard every day, so it's very exciting and rewarding to see our efforts in print. Julie Arcari, via email Lost Art I have real admiration for long-standing family enterprises with deep community roots, so your piece on Gardner Mattress (January/February 2013, "Rest Assured," page 112) was a real kick for me. The writer really got inside the place, both literally and figuratively. It got me thinking about how much the making of things has changed. Sure, things are more convenient; I appreciate the need for that. But there is something so illustrious about the workers featured in those circa-1935 photographs. They had me marveling at the toil it once was to take tools in hand. Lionel Putnam, via email Quality Control I subscribe to a few other monthly publications and have noticed a decline in the quality of the paper used and, what seems to me, shrinking content. They have become very flimsy and thin! Northshore is anything but! I love the clarity and full size of the photos, the variety of topics you cover, and the attention you give to every detail. Kudos to you for keeping it interesting and attractive. I will close by saying that I feel you do your advertisers a special justice—sometimes the ads look like part of the stories. Mary Siegel, via email Pool Party I loved seeing your feature about swimming pools in the March/April issue ("Swim Pickings," page 160)! We're thinking about updating our own pool and found the information and ideas in this piece so helpful. Thank you! Jim Hughes, via email the twitter universe [Northshore magazine] proves print is not dead. [The] latest issue is full of good articles. Marcel Moreau This NORTH SHORE OF BOSTON GIRL loves your MAG!!
