We are all living though something so unprecedented—each day changes the course that our community and our country must take in order to fight a disease that is taking the lives of so many around the world. And as much as I miss visiting with my friends and family—my beautiful one-year- old niece, Shea, and her big brother, John; my sister, Patty, who has been hospitalized for two weeks with no visitors allowed; my dear friends Victoria and Abigail, attending Andover High School remotely—there are those in our community whose struggles have been so much more difficult, and permanent, than ours. It was just last week that I heard of the passing of North Shore Music Theatre's photographer, Steven Richard, who recently lost his battle with COVID-19. We continue to pray for his wife (and NSMT's general manager), Karen Nascembeni, who, as I write this note, is still hospitalized and battling this unforgiving virus. Our Northshore team will keep the Richard-Nascembeni family in our thoughts and prayers, as well as so many others in our community that have been struck by this illness. I have been reporting these past weeks on the small businesses hit hardest by the shutdowns, and in doing so have learned about so many acts of kindness, compassion, and empathy from our neighbors, restaurateurs shopkeepers, and business leaders. For example, Thomas Holland of A&B Burgers has turned his restaurant into an assembly line of sorts, donating burgers to healthcare works in the community as well as making meals for underprivileged schoolchildren in Beverly. Dayle Ciampa of Dayle's European Skin Care & Med Spa has donated all of the spa's N-95 masks and protective gloves to hospital workers. Sandra Sigman of Les Fleurs delivers bouquets to assisted living facilities in the Andover area, while florist Elyse Gaynor delivers arrangements to nurses as a thank- you. Nancy Batista-Caswell of Ceia and Brine raised funds so she could deliver more than 500 meals to the Anna Jaques Hospital staff. The stories are endless, but each and every one of them is so important. And, of course, there are the nonprofits that continue to provide food, clothing, and shelter for those in need: The Red Cross, Lazarus House, Open Door, Our Neighbors' Table, The United Way, Uncommon Threads, Northeast Arc, and so many more. And the healthcare workers who treat COVID-19 patients while putting themselves at risk. We applaud you all, and we are so grateful that we are able to continue to tell the very important stories of what makes the North Shore such a strong, resilient, and beautiful community to live in. I wish you all good health in these very uncertain days. We would love to hear how our readers are getting on during this time. Please email us and share your stories of hope. Nancy E.
