48 an irrational number, creating sequences that in theory, extend into infinity without repetition. Balanced on slender tripods and permeable by sunlight, the works invite viewers to take shelter beneath their canopies, where the interplay between light and shadow on both the ground and surrounding environment adds to the sense of movement contained within its welded forms. These dappled shadows invite the viewer to contemplate freely, as many have throughout history under the waving shade of leafy trees. The form of the sculptures echoes natural structures and are reminiscent of familiar structures, such as clouds, trees, neural pathways or ice crystals. But the Formations ultimately reject such a straightforward interpretation. The works were first displayed in the courtyard of the Royal Academy of Arts in 2015 where the installation was called Dappled Light of the Sun. The series has since gone on to be exhibited in locations throughout the world, including China, America and the Middle East, each environment offering a fresh interpretation of the infinite universe contained within the shadows.
