O ne look at the image on this page and you pretty much see Coach Darrell Hazell as he was during most of spring practice. The first-year Boilermaker coach did not change expression much throughout the course of practice, yet he was constantly writing notes and no doubt cataloging mental ones as well. There is little doubt that Hazell is still in assessment mode with this team. How could he not be? And while the new coach has been complimentary of the effort level of his new team, you get the sense he knows he has a lot of work ahead. Quarterbacks Rob Henry, Danny Etling and Austin Appleby all had their moments in spring practice, but not so much so that Hazell was compelled to name a starter. In fact, while Henry and Etling may have distanced themselves ever so slightly from Appleby, Hazell is far from eliminating anyone from getting the first shot. If you are stressing competition, it makes sense to keep the highest-profile position still in play for someone to win. While it is all about competition for Hazell and his staff, it's also about changing the culture. Now before anyone goes accusing us of laying the wood to Hazell's predecessor and the tactics and strategies of his staff, one must remember all coaches want to change the culture when the job is in their name. So, in some ways, TABLE OF CONTENTS Cover Story: Spring overview Q&A with Darrell Hazell From Brian Neubert Gallery: Spring football Dolapo Macarthy feature Sean Robinson feature Robert Kugler feature Football recruiting update Football depth chart Mike Alstott feature Hazell is doing the expected, though positive culture seems to have increased importance in Hazell's plan. It is all about culture and process to Hazell and his staff and I think that is what this program needs. And just because Hazell is quiet doesn't mean Purdue's workouts are done in silence. It is quite the opposite. Hazell's nine assistants aren't shy about being heard. The thing I like is they are in constant teaching mode, with actions speaking as loud as words in this instance. Tom Campbell Now is this a nice way for me to say that the program's resurgence may take some time? Maybe. There are a lot of unknowns heading into summer. It is a time of major transition, so having unknowns out there shouldn't surprise anyone. It's converting those questions into answers that will tell how successful 2013 and beyond will be. j John Purdue Club Report Jim Young feature Men's basketball look at 2013-14 Men's basketball lineups Men's basketball recruiting Brian Cardinal salutes Gene Keady Gallery: Basketball Women's basketball look at 2013-14 Women's basketball lineups Women's basketball recruiting Gold & Black IllustrateD • volume 23, issue 5 Remembering Jim Ackerman Golden Pete Awards Jordan Minch feature Inside Dave Shondell's office Casey Matthews feature Golf update Track update David Boudia update
