Meet the Experts CONTRIBUTORS LARRY ALSUM Larry Alsum is the owner, presi- dent and CEO of Alsum Farms, Inc and Alsum Farms & Produce, Inc of Friesland, Wis. Larry has been in the potato packing and marketing busi- ness for over 29 years and the farming operation for 20 years. Larry has a bachelor’s of business administration degree in accounting from UW- Whitewater and spent six years in public account- ing before taking over the produce packing and wholesale business in 1981. Originally from Montana, Bohl has a bachelors degree in general crop production, a masters in crop production and botany and a Ph.D. in crop production/crop physiology. Mauseth has more than 20 years experience in mechanized irrigation. He currently manages product development for the Valley GPS products from the Valmont office in Valley, Neb., but travels nationally to bring advanced technology solutions to the field. Valley Dealers work with Mauseth when challenged with special circumstances, much like the power lines in Minn. FRANK MUIR Frank Muir is the president and CEO of the Idaho Potato Commission. Headquartered in Eagle, Idaho, the Commission is a state organi- zation for the promotion of Idaho Potatoes, a focus the group has had a hand in for over 70 years. DAVID FAIRBOURN David Fairbourn is manager of industry communications and policy at the United States Potato Board in Denver. NORA OLSEN Nora Olsen is an extension potato specialist and associate extension professor with the University of Idaho. He is serving his fifth year on the USPB and second year as Co-Chairman of the Domestic Marketing Committee. In 2002, Michael served as president of the NPC and had worked on begin- ning an industry-wide trade expo encompassing all production sectors and creation of the Industry Leadership Institute. He farms 2,700 acres with his two brothers, Scott and Kurt, including the farm originally started by their father, Doug. MIKE THORNTON Mike Thornton is the super- intendent of the Southwest Idaho Research and Extension Centers for the University of Idaho. Cropping systems, diseases and potato breeding and genetics are his areas of focus. He has a Ph.D. from UI and his office is located in Parma, Idaho.
