Jim started his career with Cargill in May, 2000 as an Equine Specialist and has been instrumental in elevating our position as the industry leader in equine nutrition. Being a veterinarian gave Jim a unique perspective and a strong desire to provide solutions to common equine health issues through nutrition. Jim Ward, D.V.M. is a graduate of Texas A&M University School of Veterinary Medicine. He practiced equine veterinary medicine for forty years, emphasizing equine reproduction. He has been extensively involved in the equine industry, owning and managing several breeding farms. He is a former board member and a past president of the Texas Thoroughbred Association. He was also a board member of The Breeders Cup Ltd and Texas Racing Agri-Industry Council. He is a member of the Cargill Product Development Team and the Cargill Equine Specialist Team. His passion has been to develop feeds that would provide solutions for veterinarians and horse owners for diseases such as Colic, Laminitis, Tying-up, Developmental Orthopedic Disease, Cushing's Disease and Equine Metabolic Syndrome. Jim presently serves on the Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine Development Council. He is also an Adjunct Professor at the College of Veterinary Medicine where he presents lectures on equine nutrition to veterinarians, veterinary students and equine industry members. Ward is a Life Member of the Texas Thoroughbred Association and is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, American Association of Equine Practitioners, Texas Veterinary Medical Association, and the Texas Equine Veterinary Association. Jim identified the key issues that large commercial users were facing and went to work to provide a product that would be able to fit the wide variety of horses on the farm while providing a combination of performance and safety that had not been realized before. The work in this area led to a product being developed by Cargill team work that provided a highly fortified feed that could be fed to all life stages. The use of high fat, digestible fiber, and controlled starch allowed horses to thrive while significantly reducing the occurrence of digestive upsets such as colic and laminitis. This break- through in equine feeding became the product we all know as SafeChoice! Jim leveraged this new break through to feed some of the most influential horse farms in the industry such as the 6666 Ranch, the Pitchfork Ranch, Carol Rose Quarter Horses, JEH Stallion Station, Waggoner Ranch, EE Ranches, Alpha Equine and Center Ranch. We would also like to recognize the sacrifice Jim's family has made to support his career with Cargill. He is looking forward to spending additional time with Kathy, his wife of 50 years and children Angie Jacobs , Michael Ward and Stephanie Bobbitt. Kathy and Jim are the proud grandparents of Madison Jacobs, Ethan Jacobs, Caleb Jacobs, Georgia Ward and Samuel Bobbitt.
