Wiley—Academic Integrity In the Age of Online Learning 3 Previous studies on this issue surveyed students about their attitudes and opinions regarding cheating in online learning environments—and the findings were mixed. Historically, studies indicate higher levels of academic dishonesty in live courses vs. online ones. Yet unprecedented times often yield unprecedented results. It remains to be seen whether the increased volume of online courses will shift the ratio. The question of what to do about cheating is not easy to answer, and there are multiple approaches: some technical, some pedagogical, and others cultural or attitudinal. The Wiley survey shows that instructors implement the following solutions to prevent cheating: Proctor/monitor tests (in-person or webcam) Use webcams and videos Incorporate lockdown browser Use Zoom Use plagiarism software 34% 16% 15% 6% 4% Instructors who deliver online exams synchronously are more likely to feel webcams are very important. Instructors who experience online cheating frequently are more likely to feel keystroke recognition is very important.
