PHOTOS: U.S. FIGURE SKATING, RINK ARCHIVES REAL PROGRAMS Successful programs to consider adopting REAL PROGRAMS Learn to Skate in the new normal F IRST AND FOREMOST, facility management must make the health and safety of its staff, participants and the overall community its num- ber one priority. Your skating programs need to have a plan as you welcome back eager customers. While we all want our lives to return to "before COVID," don't expect things to be business as usual in the immediate future. At this time, it's especially impor- tant to have a plan that delivers on your program goals while addressing the new challenges of our daily lives. Because each ice rink and associated business is unique, there is no one-size- fits-all guide. The following recom- mendations are based on the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) social distancing and sanitation practices to help stop the spread of coronavirus and ensure that your participants feel safe and comfortable in your facility. ASSESS YOUR SITUATION Skating clubs, programs and ice rinks across the nation are unique entities that operate under various local contexts. Before resuming full-service program- ming, review your local government and health agency's COVID-19 response to develop appropriate policies and proce- dures for your situation. Each skating director, coach and facility staff member must enforce policies and procedures intended to keep all partici- pants safe. By following these guidelines and those of local government and health agencies, skaters and their families will be able to make informed decisions about when they can return to the ice. Beginning skaters generally need more person-to-person contact with instruc- tors, from helping them get up to retying their laces.
