Third, the political conventions provided a unique challenge and opportunity for both parties and their presidential nominees to craft their messages for targeted audiences. Each party conveyed its vision of the present and the future. The debates may be the most watched in recent years. At the end of the day, Americans will have to view each candidate on the basis of an economic recovery, keeping burdensome regulations in check, providing a beacon for peace and unity among the American people, the ability to work with Congress and strengthen our relationship with allies around the world. Fourth, Democrats only need to turn four seats to gain control of the Senate. At the time of this writing, the outcome is uncertain. The House looks out of reach for Republicans. Whichever direction the electorate decides to take will have significant implications for legislative priorities in January 2021. Regardless of the outcome of the elections, we will have a great deal of education to provide to new members of Congress and their staffs who know little about our industry and policy. It is an incredibly important task that we work on constantly as policymakers make decisions that directly impact the sugar industry. HURRICANE SEASON Hurricane Laura slammed into Louisiana cane country Aug. 26-27. This was on top of Hurricane Hanna that hit the Texas cane area July 22-27. This is a very active hurricane season, and it does not typically end until late November, so the story is not yet written for this season. Let us hope that our cane brethren do not suffer further damage. A THREAT TO NEONICOTINOIDS The Natural Resources Defense Council has petitioned to EPA to ban five active ingredients of the neonic class of pesticides. Several of these products are used by sugarbeet growers as seed treatments, including Poncho Beta (clothianidin) by Bayer, Nipsit Inside (clothianidin) by Valent, and CruiserMaxx (thiamethoxam) by Syngenta. Neonics were banned in France with disastrous effects reducing sugarbeet yields this year by 30 to 50 percent. We filed strong comments with EPA to defend our continued use of these products. We use less than 3 tablespoons per acre of neonics on our seed treatments with virtually no threat to humans, the environment, pollinators and groundwater, with no residues in refined sugar. Unfortunately, these types of attacks on your crop protection tools continue to increase in the U.S. and globally. However, we have strong arguments against these types of attacks, which attempt to undermine EPA's regulatory framework. Now, the good news is that we are expecting a very good crop and market prices are stable. In all of the challenges faced this year, getting a good crop harvested, processed and in the bag would be essential to all of our growers. Have a safe and productive harvest. n
