THE FORD BRONCO R RETURNS TO BAJA byline By SCORE Journal Staff, Photos courtesy Ford Motor Co. As part of the Desert Assassins Racing team, the Ford Bronco R will be returning to compete at the 53rd BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 1000. The Bronco R debuted and competed in last year’s race as a test-bed for the new 2021 Bronco SUV. “Ford got a lot of data from racing the Bronco R last year. This year, the Ford team will again be testing many of the vehicle’s components such as the engine, transmission, transfer-case, mounting hardware and more,” said Cameron Steele of the Desert Assassins. “We and the rest of the team have been working with Ford on the Bronco R over many months and watching Ford engineers behind the scenes lets you know why the product is so good.” Steele says that the Desert Assassins have around 3,000 miles of hard off-road testing with the Bronco R and they are ready to once again take it through its paces at this year’s SCORE Baja 1000. “Rene Brugger on our team will be the lead tech on the Bronco R,” said Steele. “Eleven-time SCORE Baja 1000 winner Johnny Campbell will return as the Bronco R’s team manager and will also co-drive. Other co-drivers for this race will be KOH Champion Jason Scherer, ORMHOF Inductee Curt Le Duc, myself, and Shelby Hall (granddaughter to Rod Hall). All of us have been involved in the continued testing and have tons of miles logged on the vehicle.” The Bronco R is the race version of the 2021 model Ford Bronco SUV. It was built by Geiser Brothers Racing and has many factory components in it that are being developed and tested by Ford’s engineering team. “We’re impressed with Ford’s effort on this and the Geiser Bros built a great vehicle,” said Steele. “Ford has been incredible to work with and their attention to detail is shockingly amazing. They asked us to build a race team around the Bronco R and I think we have a stellar group. “
