WWW.POTATOGROWER.COM 13 Lockwood/Double L Hire Salesmen for Columbia Basin Lockwood Manufacturing has expanded its sales and service reach for customers in the Columbia Basin of Washington and Oregon. Collaborating with Double L, Larry Benzel will represent both companies as the area's regional salesman. Benzel brings with him over 40 years of industry experience in Washington State, most of those years with Evergreen Implement. As a teenager, Benzel first worked on Lockwood equipment for his father, who worked for Lockwood. SS Equipment, Lockwood's service dealer in the Columbia Basin, has hired Larry's son Justin Benzel as a dedicated Lockwood service technician. SS Equipment partnered with Lockwood in 2019 as the region's Lockwood service dealer. Justin joins the team with a strong working knowledge of Lockwood's machinery. He is a third-generation Benzel to work on Lockwood equipment. Potato LEAF Awards Scholarship to Texas A&M Student The Potato Leadership, Education and Advancement Foundation (Potato LEAF) announces Jeewan Pandey, a third-year graduate student Texas A&M University's Department of Horticultural Sciences, as the recipient of its 2020-21 academic scholarship. The $10,000 scholarship is awarded annually to one graduate student with a strong interest in research that can directly benefit the U.S. potato industry. As a Ph.D. candidate and graduate research and teaching assistant, Pandey's research involves the application of DNA-based markers in potato breeding to speed up the development of new varieties that would require fewer pesticide applications. He is also conducting genetic diversity studies and genome-wide association studies with a final goal of accelerating selection using genomics-enabled approaches.
