22 Sugar Producer NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2020 SEED VARIETY REPORT | MARIBO SEED Expanding Horizons Maribo continues to improve options for U.S. growers Maribo Seed is celebrating 100 years of providing varieties to the worldwide sugarbeet industry. Over the past several years, Maribo has directed its attention to the U.S. market, developing tried, true and tested hybrids that offer key attributes required by U.S. growers. The company is currently trialing several U.S. growing regions with new hybrids developed for the Michigan, American Crystal and Minn-Dak growing regions—based on approvals. Michigan Sugar Three hybrids are currently available for the Michigan growing areas in 2021. The first Maribo hybrid is MA709, offering great Cercospora tolerance along with other attributes needed for the area. MA813 and MA814 are two hybrids that bring high tolerance to Cercospora leaf spot, with each offering excellent sugar extractability potential. American Crystal Maribo brings four competitive hybrids to American Crystal Sugar Company growers for 2021. MA717 and MA504 offer a history of solid field performance. MA902, a new hybrid, brings excellent yield, supported with a good disease package and improved tolerance to Fusarium. MA903 has a solid disease package for American Crystal growers battling key root rot issues. Minn-Dak Maribo will potentially be a new player in this market in 2021. MA905 brings great Cercospora scores with very high sugar potential and a robust disease package for other diseases that attack growers' profits. As of early October, this variety is still awaiting the sugar company's approval.
