Prop 115, Colorado's proposed late-term abortion ban, fails In a tough loss for Colorado's pro-life community, Proposition 115, a proposed ban on late-term abortion in Colorado, failed on election night. Propelled by an enthusiastic grassroots campaign that was carried out largely in the middle of a global pandemic, Prop 115 would have been a huge pro-life victory in the state that was the first to liberalize its abortion laws in 1967. Today, Colo- rado remains a destination for late-term abortions. "Despite the disappointing result, the campaign to pass Proposition 115 has demonstrated that support for human life at every stage is widespread across our state," Archbishop Samuel J. Aquila told the Denver Catholic. "I am deeply grateful to the thousands of people who worked tirelessly to pass this measure, and for all those who care for mothers, fathers and children in need, including many Catholic institutions and individuals. I pray that we will soon see the day when Colorado embraces a culture of life and recognizes the dignity of every human life at every stage of life, from con- ception to natural death." ARO U N D TH E ARCH D IOCE S E Queen of Peace breaks ground on new parish center Queen of Peace Parish in Aurora marked the beginning of a new era Oct. 18 when it broke ground on a long-awaited and much-needed new parish center that will enable the parish to continue to be a beacon of hope in the community and expand upon its many ministries. "The Lord calls us to build a parish center to help us strengthen hundreds of marriages. The Lord calls us to build a parish center where thousands of youth can learn the truth about the meaning of their lives. This is a place that will help rebuild a society that has been rav- aged by a pandemic and the forces of secularization and polarization," Queen of Peace pastor Father Felix Medina said in a press release. Queen of Peace is not only one of the archdiocese's largest parishes, it is also the most diverse. Over 100 nationalities are represented among its parishioners and over 50 languages spoken. The parish is known for its extensive outreach to the local community to serve immigrants, low-income families and other underserved populations of people. Plans for the new center began in 2015. Parishioners began a capi- tal campaign in 2017, with the goal of raising $5 million. The remain- der of the cost will come from a parish building fund, parish savings, a loan from the Archdiocese of Denver, and outside sources. 48 NOVEMBER 2020 | DENVER CATHOLIC L O S E B A R A K M E A L E V E R E T U D E A M B I O O P S U N I O N T I C K X I I L O N C U R S E D A N Z A S T A R A A H T A K E O U T L A M P P R O B E B R A H O M E R A N D E B T O O O E L I T E A U D I S K I R T E D M S T A N G E A S Y E T C I R C A L A M A I R E T C H S T O R M D R N O O B I E D I S C O A T T U S E A L S A T A N W H S E m o c . s c i l o h t a c r o f s e m a g d r o w . w w w
