NORTHSHOREMAG.COM 14 DECEMBER 2020 PHOTOGRAPHS, TOP TO BOTTOM BY SUZANNE DEGEORGE, BY GARY TARDIFF, AND BY KINDRA CLINEFF Have yourself a merry little Christmas Let your heart be light From now on Our troubles will be out of sight… Someday soon we all will be together If the fates allow Until then, we' ll have to muddle through somehow So have yourself a merry little Christmas now The words to this song written in 1943 by Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane and sung by Judy Garland in the 1944 musical Meet Me in St. Louis, could not capture the sentiment of the 2020 holiday season more. As we all continue to muddle through without being able to see our loved ones this Christmas, hope is on the horizon, with two vaccines in the works for COVID-19. As many of us have grown tired of keeping our distance and wearing masks, we must remember those who have had devastating losses this past year. We are all in this together—and hopefully will come out the other side of 2020 and into a bright, fresh start in 2021. I, for one, will never again take for granted grabbing drinks after work with friends, popping over to my sister's home for an impromptu dinner, or going to the theatre or ballet. In this issue, we share ideas on how we can still embrace and celebrate the season. We visit three floral designers who offer ideas and inspiration for decking the halls this year with festive wreaths. Amy McLaughlin has even created a wreath making kit for those who need a bit of extra help. Then we visit Amesbury baker Renee Terry, who teaches classes on decorating sugar cookies for the holidays. Her designs are delicious works of art, and her online classes are viewed all over the country. We also speak with chefs extraordinaire Justin Shoults and Michelle Mulford, who share their philosophy on creating holiday dishes from locally sourced food for the Lynn restaurant and market Uncommon Feasts. This Christmas, they will be offering both a dine-in and take-out Christmas Eve dinner menu that celebrates the North Shore's farmers and fishermen. We also bring you ideas for getting outside and enjoying our New England winter wonderland. And although we can't see A Christmas Carol at the North Shore Music Theatre this year, we hear from the delightful actor David Coffee, who has played the North Shore's beloved Scrooge for over 25 years. He shares his experience playing this iconic Christmas character. North of Boston, Christmas certainly isn't canceled this year—we just have to find new ways to experience the joy and beauty of the season. So have yourself a merry little Christmas now. Nancy E.
