4 CAVALIER CORNER Dear Cavalier Fan, We are in the final stretch of 2020 and are grateful for many generous donors and the support provided to our student-athletes, staff and coaches. This gen- erosity is critical to the overall success of each of our 27 sports. As we have previously shared, the impact COVID has had on college athletics has been signifi- cant, as schools across the country, just like Virginia, are projecting revenue losses in the tens of millions of dollars. With attendance restrictions eliminating ticket sales revenue and other traditional funding sources, donor contribu- tions will continue to be vital at the end of 2020 and into 2021. With the strong year in the stock market and tax advantages provided for in the CARES Act, there are many opportunities to support Virginia Athlet- ics prior to the end of 2020. We will continue to focus on Annual Fund gifts (many donors also make 2021 Annual Fund gifts prior to December 31) as well as scholarship endowments and the ongoing matching fund opportuni- ties provided by the University's Bicentennial Scholars Fund. We have also initiated a new endowment program for named football coaching positions, highlighted by our first commitment from Cynthia and Heywood Fralin to endow the head coach's position. The University Board of Visitors recently reviewed the updated designs for the Master Plan and we look forward to sharing the next steps for that project in the coming months. These are excit- ing opportunities to provide everlasting support for Virginia Athletics. This academic year is especially notable as it marks the golden anniversary of full coeducation at the University of Virginia. Prior to 1970 there was not a women's sport represented at UVA. This is a special issue as we look back over the last 50 years to honor the thousands of UVA women student-athletes who have spent their college years in Charlottesville. These women have cre- ated the path for our current women student-athletes and future Hoos to wear the orange and blue. These are only a handful of examples of the tremendous women who have represented the Cavaliers. We hope you enjoy reading about these trailblazers. Once the final fundraising results are complete at the end of 2020, I look forward to sharing our progress with you in our February issue. The ongoing generosity of our donor base has truly been amazing, and the impact can be seen each day as our student-athletes attend Zoom classes, train, practice and represent UVA in competition. We wish you and your family a happy and safe holiday season. Best regards, Dirk P. Katstra Executive Director 2020 BOARD OF TRUSTEES OFFICERS President Juliana Schulte O'Reilly, McLean, Va.
