10-year veteran Dwan Edwards holds another starting spot. But it's clear that Carolina needs help: It ranked 14th in rush defense last season and was 18th in rushing yards per carry. Short thinks that means he has a chance to make an immediate impact. He's not the only one. "Every time somebody has doubted him, he's done something to show them, 'I can do this,'" Evans said. "He's still doing it, and I'm sure he's going to continue to do it. "The next chapter is about to be written." Comings And Goings R Immediately after April's Draft, cornerback Josh Johnson was picked up by San Diego. Johnson, who had been projected as a fifth- to seven-round selection, was likely one of the more prized rookie free agents available. R Running back Akeem Shavers signed a rookie free agent contract with Tampa Bay, but was waived following a minicamp. He was quickly signed by New England a couple days later. He remains on the Pats' roster. R Quarterback Robert Marve was given a tryout with his hometown Buccaneers but was not given a contract following a rookie mini-camp. R Arizona signed Caleb TerBush to a free agent contract, giving the Cardinals four quarterbacks on their roster. TerBush is expected to vie for the Cards' backup QB role with Drew Stanton and Ryan Lindley behind projected starter Carson Palmer. TerBush had previously had an opportunity with Pittsburgh for the Steelers' rookie mini-camp. R Rookie center Rick Schmeig was signed by Indianapolis after first getting a tryout in Jacksonville. R Wide receiver Antavian Edison was invited to the Jaguars' mini-camp but did not receive a contract offer. R Linebacker Joe Holland is in Tampa Bay after being signed during the off-season. Previously, kicker Carson Wiggs had been resigned in Seattle after spending last season's training camp with the Seahawks. R For his 10th NFL season, Shaun Phillips signed with the Denver Broncos, a rival of his original team, San Diego, for which he played his first nine years. Phillips, who had nine-and-ahalf sacks last season, will transition to a strong-side linebacker in the Broncos' 4-3 defensive alignment. He had spent his career as an outside 'backer in the Chargers' 3-4 previously. Phillips signed a one-year, $1-million contract to play in Denver. He has 69.5 career sacks, second to only Leslie O'Neal on the Chargers' all-time list.
