to make salaries public — had increases from 2012 to 2013. Only Indiana and Illinois, according to the Free Press, did not up their salary pool. Purdue was up $400,000, ranking it the third-highest increase in the conference, behind Wisconsin ($558,000) and Nebraska ($518,000). Minnesota is up $355,000, as well. Prior to its increase, Purdue had paid less for its staff under Danny Hope than any other school. The total, according to the paper, among the 10 schools is an increase of $1,720,852.24 for 2013. Purdue has one assistant who ranks in the top-10 in the Big Ten in annual salary; Shoop's is $400,000 annually, tied with Illinois' two coordinators. Developing A Mentality Shoop was busy this spring, installing and teaching a new offense and evaluating personnel to fit into his pro style scheme. But perhaps just as important as having players grasp the concepts and learning formations was instilling a mentality of being a tough, physical unit. "I think we did that," Shoop said. "Our offensive line really worked hard in trying to fit blocks and develop a nasty demeanor. We've got a long way to go, but we sure improved running the ball. Practice 15 might have been our best practice running it, so that's good. "I think we have gotten a lot more physical on the O-line. Coach (Jim) Bridge is a great coach. He brings a little bit of that demeanor there, kind of ornery and tough. I hope that kind of becomes their calling card." Though Shoop said he'd like to identify the team's top three tackles and four interior linemen and devise a plan to get at least the sixth-best offensive linemen snaps during games, he knows it's important to develop chemistry with five players on a starting unit. In the spring, Bridge rotated the first team line nearly every week, sometimes multiple times per week. The guard spots appear to be a battle between four players: upperclassmen Cody Davis and Devin Smith and redshirt freshmen Jordan Roos and Jason King. Shoop said the line has "a long way to go" in pass protection but did see improvements. Perhaps it'll help once five players are picked.
