His daughter has three and plans to keep them long term thanks to the versatile design. Multifunctional furniture is key. "Built-ins anchor you; now people need flexibility," says Leah Hook of Gray Oak Studio. "If we're sourcing a new dining table, we're thinking how it will function as a desk." The pair is designing a guest bedroom/office in Lynnfield. "When we started the bed was the main focus, but we're now emphasizing the office aspect with rattan bookshelves, a desk with a view out the window, and upholstered accent chairs," Sonia Brady, Hook's designer partner, says. Not everyone is panicking. Jenn Sanborn of Sacris Design recently heard from longtime clients Lisa and Marc Aronson about the work spaces she designed in their Boxford Colonial. Years ago, Brady and Hook re-imagined an empty hallway that had been collecting junk for a family of five by adding a long, custom desk under a window and a closet with a sliding barn door behind it. "The wife grew up here so she appreciated our fresh take on the space," Brady says.
