A three-year-old Quarter Horse colt that was referred
to the hospital for signs of colic and unresponsive to
medical care on the farm. The horse was evaluated and
had marked distension of the cecum palpable per rectum.
The horse was taken to surgery where a firm intraluminal
mass was palpated in the right ventral colon. A pelvic
flexure enterotomy was performed. An unusual shaped
object was lodged in the ceco-colic orifice with half of
the object in the cecum and half in the RVC. The object
was able to be manipulated into the colon and towards
the pelvic flexure. The object was removed and was a
frayed cotton lead rope that had become covered with
multiple small enteroliths at every place that the lead
rope had frayed. The horse had an uneventful recovery.
