Holbrook BASEBALL 7-7 is not a bad season considering the level of competition in our division," said Forbes. Woonsocket pulled out a rare win, beating Gallagher, 3-0, behind the complete game pitching of Manny Ceballos. North Cumberland finished in first place at 12-2, followed by Mount, 11-3; Burrillville, 10-4; Lincoln, 8-6; North Smithfield, 7-7; Gallagher, 5-9; Woonsocket, 3-11, and McCourt 0-14. Against Mount, Lincoln jumped out to an early lead and was leading 10-3 heading into the final inning when the wheels nearly fell off and Mount tallied six runs, but fell just shy of pulling out the win. Connor Sheehan was the starting pitcher for LMS and held Mount in control for much of the game before having to leave because of a high pitch count. Mount countered with ace Alex Hale, but he had control problems and along with some sloppy defense from his mates, allowed six runs early and was pulled. In other games last week, Burrillville concluded its season in third place with a 9-2 win over Woonsocket. North Smithfield got a strong pitching performance from Trevor Pascoe and shutout Gallagher, 8-0. Coach Tom Forbes said the LMS upset of Mount hurt his team because had Lincoln lost, North Smithfield and Lincoln would have been tied, and North Smithfield would have gone to the playoffs because it beat Lincoln twice during the regular season. "Still, we were very competitive all season and finishing at Memorial Scholarship Fund for Blackstone Valley Tech students. His family honors his memory through the memorial scholarship for two deserving Blackstone Valley Tech students each year. "We're not taking anything for granted and I hope we bring our best to every game," said McDonald. The Northern Division has won the state tournament in each of the past four seasons. NCMS won it the past two seasons, and before that, coach Fran Clark's North Smithfield girls took the title, and Gallagher won it the year before that. NCMS will host Westerly in the first round. "We aren't conceding anything to anyone," said Clark. "We were the only team to beat North Cumberland this season and we earned our second place finish by playing sound softball," said Clark. "I really believe that if we stay on top of our game that we can go deep into this tournament." North Smithfield only lost twice this season, once to McCourt when the team was short-handed, and the other time a convincing 10-1 decision against NCMS. The Lady Northmen pulled out a pair of wins in the final week of regular season play, downing Lincoln, 11-6, and Woonsocket, 7-1. In the Lincoln game, North Smithfield exploded for six second inning runs. Mackenzie Chartier led off the inning with a bunt single, and after a walk, Rachel Palazini laced an RBI single. After that, Vanessa Vankataraman, Jen Pasquariello and Lorenza O'Donnell strung consecutive hits and Madison Pendergast ended the scoring with an RBI single. A Gabriella Deluca single, error and passed ball resulted in another run and it was 7-0 after three. The Lady 17 Northmen added two more in the fourth on base knocks by Pasquariello, O'Donnell and Cournoyer. North Smithfield utilized its entire team in the game against Woonsocket and pitcher Lindsey Clark was overpowering, striking out 11 Villa Novans. North Smithfield broke on top and at the end of three innings, it was 5-0 and with the way Clark was throwing, the game was essentially over. North Smithfield was scheduled to play Wickford in the first round of playoffs. McCourt Middle School of Cumberland entered last week with a chance of finishing in third place, but it was upset, 7-6 by Burrillville, and then lost a 4-2 decision to Gallagher and had to settle for fourth place. Rachel Bardsley pitched a great game for six innings, no hitting the Burrillville team as McCourt built a 6-1 lead. She was relieved in the seventh when lightning struck and Burrillville scored six runs to win it. Bardsley struck out six and allowed four base on balls in six innings. Helena Juntunen smashed a two-run home run and a single to lead the McCourt team. It was too much Megan Long from Gallagher as she pitched her team to a 4-2 win over McCourt and into third place in the final standings. Long is the league's leading strikeout pitcher. Gallagher was scheduled to play on the road against Chariho, and McCourt was traveling to Davisville. In other games last week, Lincoln downed Burrillville, 9-2; Gallagher blanked Burrillville, 11-0, and Lincoln smacked Mount St. Charles Academy, 16-4. North Cumberland finished in first place at 13-1, followed by North Smithfield, 12-2; Gallagher, 9-5; McCourt, 8-6; Lincoln, 6-8; Burrillville, 4-10; Mount, 4-10, and Woonsocket, 0-14. Syed I.
