VOL. 49 : N o 1 : IN PRINT SINCE '73 INSIDE JAN FEB A Future Plan! Almost everyone has heard the saying "caught between a rock and a hard place." But not everyone knows exactly what it means. They both sound the same. A rock, for instance, is hard. But then, so it seems, would be a hard place. Google describes the phrase as "an adage used to refer to a dilemma, more specifically…a situation offering at least two possibilities, neither of which is acceptable." In other words, it describes people who find themselves in the difficult situation of having to make a choice between two unsatisfactory options. Either way, they come out on the losing end. I believe that description only applies if you're looking at things from a negative, worldly standpoint. The problem with that is, if you look at things the way the world views them, then you can expect to get the same results as the world. But when you look at your situation in light of God's Word—when you apply faith to the situation—you can approach it with the expectation that it's only temporary and that you won't be there long. Eventually, everything is going to be all right. That's how I've chosen to approach this new year. Sure, the pandemic is still with us and continues to be a major threat. And if we believe the reports from the experts, things are not expected to improve anytime soon. But there's another report we can choose to believe. Jeremiah 29:11 says, "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end." That's pretty easy to understand, but read what The Message says: "I know what I'm doing. I have it all planned out—plans to take care of you, not abandon you, plans to give you the future you hope for." God has my life, and yours, "all planned out." And because He does, it can never be altered. He will never change His mind about you or me, and what He wants to do for us. The year 2020 may have had us all feeling like we were caught between a rock and a hard place. It was a year filled with heartbreak, disappointment and uncertainty with no way out. Will this new year be any different? The answer is yes. Because God has a plan, we can have hope. We can believe the report of the Lord. Ronald C.
