MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR AND CEO This has been an extraordinary year for Mount Sinai Hospital - a culmination of diligent work and adroit strategy. Fuelled by our vision to deliver the best medicine, Mount Sinai is one of North America's pre-eminent patient care, research and academic health science centres. With world class clinicians, internationally renowned scientists and best-in-class patient care, we are taking a leadership role in transforming the health-care sector. This past year has been brimming with innovation and discovery, with many examples proudly showcased in the pages of this report. We continue to lead the way in quaternary services, including high-risk pregnancy/neonatal care, sarcoma and other specialized cancer surgeries. We serve as the experts in prevalent chronic conditions such as arthritis, diabetes and heart disease. We are enriching and differentiating our Centres of Excellence - women's and infants' health, surgical oncology, inflammatory bowel disease, musculoskeletal disease, urgent and critical care, and biomedical research. As the only acute care hospital in Canada to make geriatrics a strategic priority, we are establishing the benchmark for new models of care for elderly patients. We are leading the sector with high-profile quality and patient safety initiatives, such as our antibiotic stewardship program and our prevention program for post-operative complications. We are advancing the risk management field with our enterprise-wide risk management framework that combines both operational and clinical elements. This past year we introduced the Office of Patient Experience and Outcomes, the first of its kind for a Canadian hospital, enabling Mount Sinai to serve as a learning lab for best practices in patient-centred care. Our exemplary nursing teams are utilizing new knowledge, innovation and professional practice models to redefine care delivery throughout our Hospital. And we exceeded wait time targets in Emergency Medicine Services - a key priority for us and Ontario's Ministry of Health. We are successfully advancing the Hospital's technology agenda by ensuring that our I.T. initiatives support our strategic plan. Our goal is to make Mount Sinai a leader in supporting provincial technology initiatives and in making electronic patient records a reality. By doing so we believe we will deliver the system tools required by our clinicians and enable the highest level of care and safety for our patients. The Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute at Mount Sinai continues to be a world leader in biomedical research, bringing great pride to the province and differentiating our organization. The Lunenfeld investigators are advancing knowledge in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of common illnesses and are partnering with Mount Sinai clinicians to reshape medical care at our Hospital and beyond. This year the critical work at the Lunenfeld was acknowledged via an unprecedented number of published studies, citations, awards and grants, underscoring its globally recognized reputation. Personalized medicine is the next frontier of health care and Mount Sinai is breaking new ground on this important journey of discovery. Exciting research is underway to develop personalized therapies in areas such as breast cancer, sarcoma and kidney disease. Mount Sinai is the provincial lead for an innovative pilot project to develop new tools for the clinical application of personalized medicine in arthritis and women's and infants' health. This year, we received outstanding recognition by Accreditation Canada, meeting 99 per cent of the reviewed criteria. In the words of the lead Accreditor "Any one of us would want any one of you to care for our loved ones in your Hospital." Additionally, Mount Sinai 2011-2012 MOUNT SINAI HOSPITAL ANNUAL REPORT garnered unmatched employer recognition, underscoring our commitment to a rewarding and respectful workplace. Renewal is a key ingredient in our recipe for a successful future. This year we opened six new Hospital floors that will house our Women's and Infants' program, the largest academic obstetrical, gynaecological and neonatal program in Canada. Based on continued government support, plans are underway to completely rebuild the entire footprint of our Hospital featuring state-of-the-art operating rooms, emergency facilities, and critical care and inpatient units. This metamorphosis of our facility will translate into unparalleled opportunities for us to serve our patients and our community. Strong fiscal performance is vital in this environment. Through prudent and responsible budget management, Mount Sinai Hospital enjoys its strongest financial standing in over ten years, with our Hospital operations finishing the year again in a surplus position – a formidable achievement given the continued financial pressures within our sector. We are positioned very strongly for the future, and the Hospital is poised to launch our largest capital program ever, supported by a multi-million dollar fundraising effort by our Foundation. Building a modern and accomplished hospital truly takes a community. All our achievements have been enabled by the visionary leadership of our dynamic board members, the unparalleled generosity of our donors and the unwavering commitment of our 5,000 staff, clinicians, students and volunteers. We thank you for your service. As we reflect on our accomplishments, we are reminded of our founder's commitment to quality care and determination for social justice. We honour all those who came before us as we carry on their tradition of excellence and look forward to even greater achievements. We are building for tomorrow to ensure those who seek our expertise receive the best possible care. We are well positioned to sustain our success, broaden our impact and expand into new frontiers within health care. Thank you for your ongoing support.
