Scituate junior wins AAA writing contest By DENISE PERREAULT Valley Breeze Correspondent SCITUATE – Jacqueline Youngdahl, 17, a Scituate High School junior, is the winner of this year's Katie DeCubellis Memorial Foundation annual writing and scholarship contest, sponsored by AAA of Southern New England. Jacqueline took home the $1,000 first prize in the contest that asked students to write a story about "peer pressure through social media." Jacqueline's entry of four typed pages tells the fictional tale of two girls; one had a father that died when she was very young, and the other's father is a U.S. soldier serving in Afghanistan. The first girl bullies the second almost to the point of suicide, but the soldier father's return from Afghanistan saves the day, Jacqueline related. "She wanted the other girl to feel the pain she felt," the young author said. Jacqueline intends to save some of her winnings for college, and she has used the rest to buy a car, a Chrysler Sebring convertible that "I drove home from school with the top down," she said excitedly. She is the daughter of LoriEllen and Bradford Youngdahl. Her English teacher at Scituate High, Maggie Stormont, said she always encourages her students to write and to enter contests such as AAA's. Jacqueline is a student in her 11th-grade honors English class. Katie DeCubellis was a 13-year-old student athlete in Narragansett when she was killed by a drunk driver in 1999. Celebrity judge for this year's writing contest was Joan Parker who edited the "Spenser for Hire" books and TV series, according to the foundation website (www.kdmf.org).
