THREADED FOR STRENGTH Shelby Reid Teams Up With Son Cody In Their Return To Class 1 Racing By Dan Sanchez Photos by Get Some Photo One of the biggest challenges for Class 1 racers this season, is the return of 2015 SCORE Class 1 Champion Shelby Reid. Reid has been a fierce competitor who has earned the respect of her fellow class racers over the years. In 2019 she was ready to win with a new car that she and her SCORE Class 10 Champion son, Cody, were going to campaign together as co-drivers. “We ordered a new car and we were going to team up for the 2020 season, “ said Shelby Reid. “Then in December, the car burned to the ground in a prep-shop fire. It was devastating and disappointing that our teaming up together couldn’t happen.” With the pandemic also hindering things later that year, both Shelby and Cody took time off to prepare for the 2021 season. “We missed racing and going to Mexico terribly,” said Reid. “We discussed what we were going to do and made the decision to sell Cody’s 10 car and purchase an Alumacraft Class 1 buggy. This one features a big block Chevy with a Weddle Albins transmission. The vehicle is an all-new design and we feel it’s a game-changer in Class 1.” The buggy is also AWD, and Reid says they are running 40-inch BFGoodrich Tires which offers an advantage. “We had always wanted to run 40-inch ties but couldn’t get them to fit the other car,” she said. “We’re excited to race again, and we heard nothing but good things about how the SCORE Baja 1000 went last season. SCORE’s doing it right to allow us to go racing, and as racers, we need to do what has to be done in order to race. We’re hoping that by April, COVID numbers will continue to go down and we can bring more people with us to help the team.” Both Shelby and Cody will be teaming together as they originally planned, giving the Reid family a unique advantage. “Cody has done really well in Class 10 and is a very experienced racer,” said Reid. “It will be different for us in that we won’t be pre-running the same sections together like we used to, but Cody has been wanting to do this for a long time and I think we have everything we need to win.” SJ
