MARCH 2021 | DENVER CATHOLIC
Through Jesus Christ
flows living water. This
water baptizes us into
the faith, which leads
us through the deserts
of life.
The doors to Hades
(death) are "blown
apart" by Christ, and
no longer defend hell
from the power of God.
These are typically
seen in Catholic icon
artwork.
Young vegetation along
the living water is the
new life that comes
from following the way
of Jesus Christ.
The suffering of the
cross fades behind
the glory of Christ
resurrected.
The red rocks are
modeled after Red
Rocks Amphitheater.
This is the Denver
Catholic, after all!
Their positioning
calls to mind the
broken temple and
torn temple veil from
Christ's crucifixion.
The sea behind Jesus
is the cleansing water
of the flood, with
the rainbow that
marked God's Second
Covenant forming the
orb around Christ.
The skull signifies
Golgotha, the "place
of the skull," where
Christ was crucified.
It is a memento mori
and is decaying into
the sand after death
was conquered by
Christ. "Where, O
death, is your sting?"
(1 Corinthians 15:55)
Christ resurrected,
with Mother Mary and
John the Beloved.
The title on the cover is
derived from St. Paul's
words: "For freedom
Christ has set us free;
stand fast therefore,
and do not submit
again to a yoke of
slavery." (Galatians 5:1)
